Printify Review 2020:
Pros, Cons and How It Compares
This is an in-depth review of Printify app for print on demand drop shipping.
In this review, I’ll talk about:
- What Printify is
- How it works
- Ease of Use
- Products and Pricing
- Production & Shipping
- Support & Policies
- What Alternatives There Are
Let’s get started.
Printify is a print on demand drop shipping app that you can use to sell T-shirts, hoodies, mugs and other custom goods in an online store under your own brand name. Printify will print, pack and ship products for you.
Printify’s main advantage is product pricing. As you will see in this Printify review, this company really makes sure that its production costs are lower than its competitors’.
Another great thing is the choice of products and printing facilities. Printify connects you to a huge network of print providers in the US, Europe and China, so you can choose where you prefer your products to be printed.
However, for some online business owners Printify isn’t the ideal choice. The print quality is not as consistent as with Printful, plus you can’t customise Printify’s orders by adding personal messages, flyers or business cards to the packages.
In this Printify review, I will evaluate all the things you should know about before deciding which print on demand drop shipping company is really for you.
Here’s what we will look at: ease of use, pricing, product variety, integrations, production, shipping, support, payments, alternatives.
If you’re in a rush, below you’ll find a quick summary of the main features of Printify. Read on to discover a more detailed analysis of Printify’s performance.

What is Printify?
Printify is a print on demand company that connects you to the biggest printing facilities around the world. Printify doesn’t print products itself. Instead, it acts as an intermediary between you and various printing companies.
How does Printify work?
Let’s have a more detailed look at how Printify works.
Print on demand is a unique fulfilment method, in which goods are printed only after a customer has ordered and paid for them. This means that you don’t need a stock of goods before you start selling.
Print on demand approach dramatically decreases business startup expenses: ordering blank products, printing them, holding an inventory. It also lets you experiment with product designs without tons of unwanted stock.
Drop shipping is a process of passing orders you receive in your store to a supplier, who packs and ships goods directly to the end customer. The main benefit of the drop shipping model is that you don’t have to maintain stock and spend time and money on packing and shipping.
Printify is an app that connects you to various print on demand drop shipping facilities. It collects your orders and then sends them to print providers of your choice. With Printify, you don’t have to worry about stock or production process, because it’s all handled for you.
Getting started with Printify step-by-step
1. Create custom products
To start designing your first product with Printify, sign up, go to Catalog and choose a product you’d like to print on.
Click on the preferred product. This will take you to the product page with a list of print providers to choose from.
Print providers are different printing facilities that can fulfill your order.
Pay attention to where the facility is located, price, shipping cost and average production time.
Click Start designing. This will take you to Printify mockup generator.
Choose the print placement (front side, back side), product color and upload your design.
Free T-shirt designs
Thanks for the awesome pug design to Placeit.net. It’s a site where you can download thousands of cool print designs, as well as mockup photos.

Your shirt is almost ready.
In the next step, you’ll have to fill in listing details: choose mockup images you want to use, write a description, specify retail price.
Printify provides a handy calculator of your printing expenses and profit %.
Your new product is ready to be imported in your online store. Once you complete Step 2, you’ll be able to start selling it.
2. Connect your online store
Connecting your store means allowing Printify to push the products you’ve created into your online store, as well as receive data about incoming orders.
To connect your store, you need to already have an account with one of these eCommerce platforms.
Connecting your online store to Printify is a straight-forward process.

3. Promote and sell products
In print on demand drop shipping business, marketing is your main challenge.
Printify will handle production, but you are responsible for promoting your online store and getting orders coming in.
4. Printify prints, packs and ships goods
When a customer makes an order in your online store, it will be automatically sent to Orders page in your Printify dashboard. Your print provider will begin production and Printify will charge your card the production and shipping fee in US dollars.
It will take 2-7 business days (it tends to be around 2-3 days) to print your products. After that, goods will be packed and shipped to your customer.
What’s left for you is communication with your customers.

Is Printify Easy to Use?
Quick Answer: Printify is simple and straight-forward. If your design files are ready, creating mockups with Printify and importing products to your store will take minutes.
Printify app is really intuitive and straight-forward. Personally, I love using it because it’s almost impossible to get lost in Printify interface.
Top menu has all the links you need to create new products and track orders.
In Catalog, you’ll find over 250 products you can print on.
My Store is a directory of all the products you’ve created. This is where all your published products are stored along with draft products.
Orders page lets you check order details and track order status.
Printify mockup generator is also very simple and appealing, especially since the latest UI upgrade. You can easily drag & drop files into the mockup generator, play around with multiple layers.
Here’s how the mockup generator looks when you’re designing a mug. Effortless.
One of the challenges I had with Printify mockup generator was creating a single product with different designs. For example, a T-shirt that has a white logo is my customer chooses black shirt option, or a black logo is my customer chooses white shirt option.
Even though the process is not really straight-forward, Printify’s Help Center provided me with a solution quickly. If you’re struggling with the same problem, check out this article for a step-by-step guide to creating a single product with different designs.
In fact, Printify Help Center is an awesome resource in general. If you ever get stuck, just check the Help Center articles and tutorials. So far they’ve solved most of my troubles.
Compared to Printful, Printify seems less beginner-friendly, because you won’t find tips, tricks and useful links on every corner. Sometimes the interface is a bit of a guessing game, but you get used to it.
My only concern is that some information is not easily accessible at all. For example, finding shipping rates is so much trouble.
All in all, the app works smoothly, except for some minor details.

Printify Review: Products
Quick Answer: Printify has 250+ products and product choice is growing all the time. You can use 2 standard printing techniques: DTG (direct to garment) and AOP (all over print).
Printify offers a broad selection of products you can print on. Currently there are 250+ products.
In fact, product catalog is growing really fast, because Printify is teaming up with more and more production facilities.
As I am writing, fanny packs have been added to New arrivals, and such launches occur on a regular basis. If you sign up to their newsletter or follow Printify on social media, you’ll get updates and marketing tips for every new product.
Here’s the best thing about Printify’s product choice. Some of the items are unique and unavailable from Printify’s competitors. For example, you won’t find shower curtains, pets beds, wall tapestries, tumblers or hooded blankets with Printify’s main competitor Printful.
So, if you follow the latest product launches, you can surprise your customers with awesome and eye-catching items.
Below you’ll find Printify product categories. Click on the category to discover specific products.
- Long sleeves
- Tank tops
- Long Sleeves
- Tank tops
- Baby bibs
- Long sleeves
- Bomber jackets
- High-top sneakers
- High heels
- Platform heels
- Canvas boots
- Phone cases
- Other (scarves, Christmas stockings and tree skirts, hooded blankets, aprons, watch bands, laptop sleeves, pin buttons, neckties)
- Art & wall decor
- Bathroom (bath mats, shower curtains, towels)
- Pillows and covers
- Pet beds
Two printing techniques are available with Printify:
- DTG (direct to garment)
- AOP (all-over-print)
DTG is a printing method, in which ink is sprayed onto a ready-made garment. DTG is the most popular printing method – it’s affordable and fits the needs of most POD business owners.
If you choose DTG, the printing area is always limited. It means that you can print a design on the front or the back of the shirt within a particular area. The print won’t cover the whole product from seam to seam.
Note that the size of the printing area differs from one print provider to another. Some printing facilities really stand out with an extra large printing area, which comes in handy if you have big graphic designs.
Some of Printify’s print providers also let you customise inner and outer label areas of your garment. That, of course, costs extra.
Garments are mostly cotton-based.
AOP stands for all-over-print. In this printing method, your design covers the whole garment. It is first printed onto a fabric, then cut and sewn.
Printify has an awesome variety of products you can use for AOP technique, from T-shirts to dresses, bomber jackets and socks.
All-over-print garments are mostly polyester-based.
Printify lets you print your logo on the inner and outer label areas, as well as on the sleeves of T-shirts.
It’s a great way to create a stronger, more memorable brand. However, not all print providers do this, and each new print area costs extra.
Compared to Printful, Printify’s branding options are very limited. If you are looking for a POD company that prints and embroiders logos on various garment areas, as well as adds your stickers or business cards to the order, Printful is definitely the best choice.
Printify’s mockup generator is easy to use, but unfortunately the variety of mockup pictures is low. All you can get is pictures of your garment on white background.
Only some products are photographed on models, there are barely any lifestyle images.
It’s a bit disappointing, because you have to invest a lot of time in creating the mockups yourself.
Over the years I’ve used Printify, I’ve figured out that lifestyle images tend to have higher conversion rates than Printify’s mockups. So what I do is use Placeit.net services to put all of my designs on models. There are thousands of mockup pictures and it’s an awesome time-saver if you have a big store.
Samples are essential.
Ordering samples is the only way you can check the quality of the garment and be 100% sure that your print looks great in real life.
POD beginners tend to overlook the fact that mockup files provided by Printify are just illustrations, they cannot display all the potential print issues. For example, your print file could be pixellated, colors might be too bright for the printer, there could be transparency issues.
Samples help you understand the print quality, make improvements to the design file, see the fit.
If you have samples, you are competent about your products and are able to answer customers’ questions.
With Printify, you can order as many samples as you like for the regular production cost, plus shipping. No sample discounts are available.
If you subscribe to Printify Premium for $29 per month, you’ll get a $29 samples budget.

Printify Review: Pricing
Quick Answer: Printify’s prices are among the best on the market. In Printify’s catalog you’ll find the cheapest T-shirts and hoodies.
My favorite thing about Printify is the price of goods.
Printify is very competitive in terms of pricing, so many of its products are priced considerably lower than its competitors’. Printify is the perfect POD company to choose if your primary concern is the profit margin.
Let’s compare Printify’s, Printful’s and Gooten’s pricing of some popular products side by side. For the sake of comparison I used these 4 products:
- Bella+Canvas 3001 unisex jersey short sleeve tee
- Men’s all-over-print shirt
- Gildan 18500 Unisex Heavy Blend™ Hooded Sweatshirt
- 11oz Mug
Some say that Printify’s low prices come at the expense of print quality. I wouldn’t quite agree with this.
Printify’s print providers are huge factories, all of which maintain high quality standards. However, there might be differences in quality because every print provider is an independent company with its own production and quality assurance processes.
When it comes to colours, in my experience, Printify prints turn out slightly more faded and less saturated than Printful’s. This really depends on the print provider, though.
If your designs are text-based, you are usually safe. If you print a lot of bright colours, make sure you order a sample to see how the colours turn out.
*Printify print providers used in the comparison: Bella+Canvas shirt (Awkward Styles), AOP shirt (MWW), Gildan hoodie (SwiftPOD), mug (SPOKE).
Printify Review: Integrations
Quick Answer: Printify works with Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, eBay, Wix, PrestaShop and BigCommerce.
Printify is growing the number of integrations with popular eCommerce platforms year after year. Currently, there are 7 integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce, Etsy, eBay and Wix, as well as beta versions for PrestaShop and BigCommerce.
To start using Printify, you must first establish an online store using one of these eCommerce platforms.
If you already have an online store on a different eCommerce platform, Printify offers API that lets you create custom solutions. This, however, requires more technical knowledge.
In terms of the variety of integrations, Printful is definitely stronger than Printify. Here’s a list of all platforms Printful works with: Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Ecwid, BigCommerce, PrestaShop, Weebly, Bigcartel, Magento, Gumroad, Shipstation, 3dcart, Launchcart, Etsy, Amazon, eBay, Wish, Storenvy, Bonanza.
Gooten works only with 3 platforms: Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce.

Printify Review: Production & Shipping
Quick Answer: Printify doesn’t print goods itself. Instead, it works with numerous printing facilities around the globe to fulfil your orders. Usually production takes 2-3 days.
Printify gives you the opportunity to work with 20+ different printing companies, called print providers, in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Czech Republic, China.
When you visit Printify Catalog, you can sort products by print providers. This is an easy way to discover available products in specific locations.
Print Geek, for example, fulfils orders in Canada and offers 15 different products.
Since the choice of print providers is so vast, Printify has created handy comparison tables to make your choices easier.
You can evaluate print providers, based on product price, shipping price, size variety, average production time, printing areas and product base colors.
TIP: You can use as many print providers in a single store as you wish. For example, you can print tees with Monster Digital, mugs with SPOKE and phone cases with WOYC. It’s also possible to use different POD companies in a single store, for example, Printify and Printful.
Production time differs among print providers. Printify states that production usually takes 2-7 business days (this doesn’t include shipping time).
Check out average production time for more precise estimates. You’ll see that most print providers tend to fulfil orders within a 2-4 day range.
Just like the whole print on demand industry, Printify was severely affected by COVID-19, starting from March 2020. Check Print Provider Status page to see if there are any production or shipping delays.
Shipping time and costs
Shipping time and costs depend on the print provider and the product you are selling.
Honestly, comparing shipping rates is a time-consuming process. You’ll have to open Shipping rates page and literally click on each print provider to discover the rates.
Unfortunately, there’s no tool that would let you compare shipping rates by print provider, destination country or product type.
Domestic US shipping of a single T-shirt costs $4 with most print providers. If your customers tend to order more than one product, The Dream Junction has the best rates for additional item shipping.

Printify Review: Support & Policies
Quick Answer: You can contact Printify via chat or e-mail 24/7. In addition, Printify Help Center has a wealth of technical information and tips for using the platform.
Printify’s support team works 24/7 via chat and e-mail.
Before you write, though, check if your question hasn’t already been addressed in Printify Help Center.
Personally, Help Center articles have been amazing at answering simple questions about the app integrations, payments, billing, print providers.
Printify doesn’t accept returns unless there’s been a production mistake.
If your customer receives a product that has a bad quality print, wrong print, incorrect print location or any other issue, Printify will reprint the item free of charge. All you have to do is fill in an order issue submission form and provide pictures of the faulty product.
I’ve had print issues several times, and the communication about reprints went really smoothly. It took around 3 days to produce a replacement item for my customer.
Wrong size or color
If your customer has ordered a product in the wrong size or color, has changed his/her mind or simply doesn’t like the product, Printify won’t accept returns or exchanges.
This is because all items are unique and print providers don’t stock unwanted items.
As soon as an order is sent to production with Printify, you can’t change delivery details, nor cancel the order. Printify is not responsible for such mistakes and won’t offer replacements or refunds.
Printify has a Quality Check process, in which all new and updated products have to go through inspection before you can print them.
Quality Check takes up to 12 hours. If there are any quality or copyright issues, production will be put on hold and you will be notified by e-mail.
You can print anything that doesn’t infringe on the intellectual property of others and that doesn’t contain abusive content.
Here’s more info about what you can and cannot print with Printify.
Printify Review: Payments
Quick Answer: You can use PayPal to add a deposit to your Printify account, or a credit card for automatic payments.
Printify offers 2 payment methods:
- You can transfer a balance from a PayPal account. As soon as you’ve used all of the balance, you’ll have to top it up manually.
- You can connect a single credit card. Printify will charge your card in USD every time an order is sent to production. Note that you cannot change the currency. If your bank account is set in any other currency, charges will be processed in accordance with the exchange rates provided by your bank.
There are no hidden fees with Printify. You don’t have to pay any membership fees (unless you choose Printify Premium for $29 a month), and you are only charged when Printify sends an order to production.
Quick Answer: Printify’s main competitors are Printful and Gooten. Printful tends to be more reliable in terms of quality, while Gooten’s strength is the broad selection of unique products, like bandanas, seat covers, beer steins, etc.
Printify vs. Printful
Printify and Printful may sound similar, but the business models of these companies are different.
Instead of connecting you to multiple third-party print providers, Printful actually owns all of its printing facilities.
This means that Printful can directly control the consistency of print quality. In addition, Printful prints exclusively on industry-leading Kornit printers that produce the most saturated colors, which are as close to the original design as possible.
Due to that, Printful has a reputation for having the best POD print quality on the market.
However, Printful is not cheap.
In fact, your margins with Printful will be considerably slimmer than with Printify.
Before we move on to Printful’s strengths and weaknesses, take a look at this summary.
$13.31 Bella+Canvas printed T-shirt
US, Mexico, Latvia, Spain, as well as partner facilities in Australia and Japan
Neck labels, custom packing slips, branded pack-ins
Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Ecwid, BigCommerce, PrestaShop, Weebly, Bigcartel, Magento, Gumroad, Shipstation, 3dcart, Launchcart, Etsy, Amazon, eBay, Wish, Storenvy, Bonanza
Both Printful and Printify have simple and easy to use interfaces, great mockup generators. Both POD services are free (in addition, Printify offers a paid plan that gives you 20% off all products), and both have no minimum order requirements.
Printful beats Printify in terms of:
- Consistency of quality. Because Printify works with so many different partners, you can’t expect all prints to be exactly the same. Printify’s quality is generally good, but there can be slight print quality inconsistencies. Since Printful owns all of its facilities, it can control the production process much better.
- Labels and branding. Printify can print only neck labels on garments. Printful has many more ways to customise the product and your customer’s unboxing experience.
Printify is better than Printful in terms of:
- Production costs. To print a popular Bella+Canvas tee, you’ll spend $6.76 with Printify vs. $13.31 with Printful. That’s an astonishing $6.55 difference per single product.
- Product variety. Currently Printify catalog features 250+ products, and it’s growing constantly. Printful has 220+ items, but there are no unique items, like sneakers, hooded blankets, shower curtains, etc.
Printify vs. Gooten
Gooten is a lesser known POD company, but you might be surprised how good their product catalog and prices are.
The way Gooten operates is quite similar to Printify. Gooten also connects you to a network of printing facilities worldwide. However, Gooten won’t let you choose, which print provider you want to work with. It uses dynamic order routing feature, which automatically directs orders to a facility that is closest to your customer.
$9.90 Bella+Canvas printed shirt
US, Canada, UK, Europe, Asia, Australia. Production partners chosen automatically via dynamic order routing.
100+ products, tons of unique items
Neck labels only
Shopify, WooCommerce, Etsy
Gooten’s production prices and print quality are similar Printify’s. You’ll pay $9.90 for a Bella+Canvas tee (Printify $6.76, Printful $13.31).
Personally, I find Gooten’s interface very hard to work with. It’s not clean, nor simple, so you’ll have to spend quite a bit of time trying to understand where to click. Finding answers on their website is also troublesome, so I used Google to check essential shipping and production details faster.
On a more positive note, Gooten offers products you can’t find anywhere else. Thanks to the unique products and good pricing, dealing with Gooten’s website might be worth your time.
For example, there’s an exciting variety of baby products: beanies, bibs, seat covers, pad covers, crib sheets and more. Also pet products: pet bandanas, placemats, dog beds.
Note that Gooten only works with Shopify, WooCommerce and Etsy.
